Shot Blasting London

Using highly pressurised air, shot blast cleaning is the most effective method for removing paint and other coatings from a whole range of substrates such as timber, steel, brickwork, iron, wood, glass, concrete, stone, fibreglass etc. Formerly known as Sand Blasting, the practice involves propelling abrasive media onto a surface which cuts away at the substance to reveal a clean base. Commonly used to remove oxides from metal surfaces, shot blast cleaning can rid steel of surface rust ready for repairs or providing a profile on steel before applying coatings. This not only cleans the area but the profile promotes better adhesion for protective coatings such as paint.

The video above shows GoPro Helmet Camera footage whilst performing one of our methods of shot blast cleaning known as Wet Blasting which adds liquid to help minimise dust exposure. We are also running dust extraction units in the video to further aid dust particles which also helped visibility for the sake of the video. The haze in the video is a mix of noise disturbance on the camera as well as surface abrasion to the helmet visor as a result of the shot blasting. The video is displayed in four times the normal speed for easier viewing.

Sand Blasting in London today is actually what is known as Shot Blasting. The actual practice of Sand Blasting in London stopped in 1999 when common sand was banned as an abrasive media due to the risks involved with the fine silica dust associated with the sand. Today we use more refined materials such as Glass Beads and Steel Grit to eliminate the risk of silicosis – a potentially fatal lung disease.

We employ a highly skilled team who are fully trained in using a variety of media to blast clean surfaces and objects. Different surfaces require different shot blasting media for the most effective and best results. Before commencing work on any project, our operatives will ensure that we understand your exact requirements in order to select the best media for the job. With over 25 years’ experience in the industry, you can trust Intercity Contractors with all of your shot blasting needs.

For smaller items, we offer our Collect & Restore service in which we will collect your item in London and take it back to our Midlands depot to work on.
